Dungeons & Dragons Enters the Galaxy Far, Far Away

Wizards of the Coast has announced an exciting new addition to the Dungeons & Dragons franchise: an official Star Wars expansion. This expansion will be part of the company’s Universes Beyond label, which aims to bring popular franchises into the world of tabletop gaming.

Lucasfilm’s iconic galaxy far, far away will be the second Universes Beyond addition to D&D, following the previously-announced World of Warcraft expansion. Fans of the Star Wars universe will be thrilled to hear that they will be able to play as their favorite characters from the franchise, exploring the richly detailed world of the Star Wars universe.

Gen Con 2026 Reveal

The big Gen Con 2026 reveal panel last night ended with a surprise announcement that a Star Wars tabletop expansion will arrive in 2027 as part of the company’s Season of Rebellion, due in the back half of next year. The panel was greeted warmly, especially when Darth Vader appeared on stage to relay the news.

The Season of Rebellion is a part of D&D’s broader product roadmap, which includes several other releases. The Season of Magic, which kicked off this year, contains the Arcana Unleashed expansion, which adds a further eight subclasses, 10 backgrounds, 29 feats, 33 spells, 19 magical creatures and more. This expansion will be followed by Deadfall, a high-stakes magical espionage campaign for characters at levels 11-20.

Season of Survival and Beyond

2027 begins with the Season of Survival, which will see D&D’s adult Dark Sun setting return. This setting is known for its harsh environment and high-stakes gameplay. In addition to the Season of Survival, D&D is also releasing a book that comes shrink-wrapped and with a content warning for violence, sex and nudity.

The Season of Sword & Sorcery will feature a return to Greyhawk with a new Crown of the Witch Queen expansion, before the Star Wars-themed Season of Rebellion. These expansions demonstrate the breadth and depth of D&D’s product roadmap, which includes something for every fan of the franchise.

Universes Beyond

Wizards of the Coast has stressed that its Universes Beyond explorations are separate and additional to its core offerings, with extra staff brought in to work on these projects, rather than them being a replacement for core expansions.

"We want to let our community know that D&D Universes Beyond is additive to the incredible roadmap we have for our own worlds," Wizards of the Coast wrote in a blog post on its forthcoming product roadmap. "We have been staffing up to support this initiative and look forward to what the future holds."
