Mass Funeral in Gaza for 112 Victims of Israeli Strike

In a somber and emotional ceremony, hundreds gathered in Gaza City to mourn the lives of 112 people, mostly from a single extended family group, who were killed in one of the deadliest Israeli military strikes of the war in 2023.

The funeral procession was a poignant reminder of the devastating impact of the conflict on innocent civilians, with the majority of the victims being children. The 112 coffins, each draped with a Palestinian flag, were carried through the streets of Gaza City, accompanied by mourners who scattered flower petals over the bodies and prayed for the dead.

At the funeral, Mahmoud Basal, spokesman of Gaza’s Civil Defense, delivered a powerful and emotional speech, asking the nation to question why children were being killed in Gaza. He also highlighted the issue of women and innocents being massacred in the conflict.

The Israeli military has claimed that it does not deliberately target the civilian population and takes all feasible measures to mitigate harm to civilians. However, the statement also passed the blame to Hamas, stating that it ‘systemically operates from within, beneath and in close proximity to densely populated areas and civilian infrastructure, exploiting the civilian population to shield its military activities.’

The funeral was a long-overdue ceremony, as it took nearly three years to recover the bodies of the victims due to ongoing attacks by Israel. The original strike in November 2023 targeted a residential block in Gaza City, leaving only 40 bodies recoverable at the time. However, more than 300 people were presumed killed in the attack.

More recently, civil defense recovery teams were able to dig through the rubble and exhume the remains of the 112 people memorialized in the funeral. Unfortunately, around 150 people are still missing, and their families continue to wait for news of their loved ones.

The conflict in Gaza has been marked by numerous human rights abuses, with a United Nations commission finding that Israel is committing genocide in the region. Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International have also made similar findings, stating that Israel has deliberately targeted and killed Palestinian children.

Israeli officials have denied these claims, stating that Hamas attempted genocide in its October 7, 2023, attack on Israel. The attack resulted in the deaths of around 1,200 people, while five Israeli soldiers have died since the October 2025 cease-fire.

The Israeli-Palestinian conflict has resulted in the loss of over 73,000 lives in Gaza since October 7, 2023, with more than 1,250 people killed since the cease-fire. The ongoing violence has had a devastating impact on the people of Gaza, with many still waiting for justice and accountability for the atrocities committed during the conflict.
