SpaceX’s Tesla Megapack Purchases Reach $329M This Year, Exposing the Interconnected World of Elon Musk’s Companies
SpaceX has significantly ramped up its purchases of Tesla Megapack battery storage devices, spending $295 million on these devices in the second quarter alone. This brings the total amount spent by SpaceX on Megapacks to $329 million so far this year, according to the company’s earnings report released on Tuesday.
The large-scale battery purchases illustrate just how interconnected Elon Musk’s universe of companies are. As the CEO and largest shareholder of SpaceX, Musk also runs Tesla. Furthermore, his artificial intelligence business xAI acquired his social media platform, X, in 2025. Prior to this acquisition, xAI had already purchased $430 million worth of Megapacks for its data centers.
The industrial-scale batteries are likely being deployed at the company’s xAI data centers, where they will play a critical role in supporting the data centers’ power needs. Large batteries like the Megapack are essential for data centers, providing substantial backup power that can be tapped in a second or less. They can also provide extra power to Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) when they demand it.
AI data centers don’t draw power consistently. Instead, their power demand ramps up and down depending on the demands of training AI models and running inference. Such peaks can incur significant charges from a local utility or overwhelm on-site generators. Batteries help smooth out those peaks, lowering costs while ensuring that the data center can operate consistently.
The purchase of Tesla Megapacks by SpaceX is a testament to the importance of large-scale batteries in supporting the power needs of data centers. As the demand for AI computing continues to grow, the role of batteries in supporting data center operations will become even more critical.
In addition to its Megapack purchases, SpaceX also reported that as of December 2025, it had acquired $131 million worth of Tesla Cybertrucks at manufacturer’s suggested retail price, according to its regulatory filing.
The use of Megapacks by xAI and now SpaceX highlights the importance of reliable and efficient power storage in supporting the operations of data centers. Though xAI has leaned heavily on natural gas to power its data centers, including dozens of unpermitted turbines at a site in Mississippi not far from the Colossus data center project, large batteries like the Megapack are still a critical part of data centers.
