From Engineering to Aviation: The Inspiring Story of a Family’s Plane-Building Adventure

Ashok Aliseril Thamarakshan, a mechanical engineer based in Essex, England, embarked on an extraordinary journey when he decided to build a plane in his garden. The project was sparked by his love for flying, which began when his wife, Abhilasha, gifted him a 30-minute flight experience for his birthday.

With a private pilot’s license in hand since 2019, Aliseril started hiring planes for short flights. However, as his family grew, the two-seater planes became less suitable, and he began to consider buying his own plane. But he was hesitant about flying his family in an older aircraft that he wasn’t familiar with.

Aliseril’s engineering background and home improvement experience proved invaluable in this endeavor. He began researching self-assembly aircraft kits and discovered the Sling TSi, a four-seater plane manufactured by South African company Sling Aircraft. Impressed by the aircraft’s design and capabilities, he ordered the first kit and began the construction process.

The project was delayed due to COVID-19 restrictions, but Aliseril persevered, working from his home and a small shed in his garden. The Light Aircraft Association, a UK representative body, monitored the construction and maintenance of the aircraft, ensuring that it met the necessary safety standards.

After 18 months of hard work, the aircraft, named G-Diya, was finally signed off for its first flight in January 2022. The family of five, including Aliseril, his wife, and their two daughters, took to the skies, experiencing the thrill of flying in their very own plane.

With G-Diya, they’ve traveled extensively within the UK and even ventured as far as Norway, clocking over 300 hours of flight time in the past two years. The plane has become an integral part of their lives, providing them with freedom and creating unforgettable memories.
