Could This Be the Best World Cup Ever?
As we navigate the thrilling journey of the World Cup, it’s difficult not to wonder: could this be the best World Cup ever? The tournament has been filled with Cinderella runs, the biggest stars shining bright, and a blockbuster round of 16 that has left fans on the edge of their seats.
From the outset, the World Cup has been shrouded in skepticism. The prices were too high, the format was too cumbersome, and the players were too tired. However, as every World Cup has shown, football has a way of defying expectations. This time, it really could be the best yet.
The Underdogs Rise
Underdogs have been making headlines by upsetting the biggest names in the tournament. Germany, the Netherlands, and Uruguay have all fallen early on, while England has been appreciative of their efforts. The host nations, USA, Canada, and Mexico, have all been engaged by teams who have taken them on a deep run.
The round of 16 has seen some of the biggest upsets, with Paraguay giving France a bloody nose, and Mexico taking on England in the Estadio Azteca. The roar at Lumen Field when the USA took on Belgium was electrifying, and the quarterfinals are shaping up to be a mouth-watering clash between France and Morocco, Spain and Belgium, Brazil and England, and Argentina and Colombia.
The Best Individuals on the Planet
The best individuals on the planet have been delivering, with Lionel Messi still the best of the best. Kylian Mbappe is determined to beat his scoring record as soon as possible, while Erling Haaland, Harry Kane, Michael Olise, and Vinicius Junior are all stepping up in the biggest moments. Even Cristiano Ronaldo is providing us with voluminous, if not necessarily fresh, discourse.
The expansion to 48 teams brought its problems in the group stages, but no one can doubt the depth of quality in the field. Africa may have dropped from nine in the round of 32 to two in the last 16, but their representatives have almost uniformly proven that they can hang with the big boys.
It’s not implausible that within the next few tournament cycles, Morocco, Senegal, and Ivory Coast will be considered among the top teams in the world. And so, this World Cup ticks most, if not all, of the boxes it could have to be considered one of the great tournaments on the field.
Will This Be the Greatest World Cup Ever?
For most of us, the greatest World Cup is the first we really remember, probably around eight to 12 years of age. However, this World Cup has the potential to be the greatest ever, with the best teams and individuals on the planet vying for the top prize. The semifinals are shaping up to be a clash between Brazil or England against Argentina, and France and Spain in the other.
However, for most of us, it’s not about the best teams and individuals on the planet; it’s about the memories we create along the way. The Zinedine Zidane final, Dennis Bergkamp’s wonder goal, and everything about England vs. Argentina are etched in our memories forever. Goodness, though, you’d like to see them try.
