PlayStation’s Disc-less Future Sparks Backlash

Sony’s decision to ditch video game discs on PlayStation consoles from 2028 has sparked a heated debate among gamers. The news has been met with widespread criticism, with over 90% of IGN’s audience rejecting the idea of an all-digital gaming future.

The decision affects not only the current PS5 but also its next-generation counterpart, the PS6, which is expected to launch without a disc drive. Microsoft’s upcoming console, codenamed Project Helix, is also rumored to follow suit. However, Nintendo remains committed to physical media.

A recent IGN poll, which has garnered over 13,000 responses, found that 90.2% of respondents oppose an all-digital gaming future, while only 9.8% support it. The overwhelming majority of gamers are clearly opposed to this shift towards digital-only gaming.

Why Did Sony Decide to Abandon Discs?

Sid Shuman, Senior Director of Sony Interactive Entertainment Content Communications, explained that the decision was made in response to changing consumer preferences. Shuman stated that the general preference for digital media has significantly outpaced physical discs, and that this transition will enable Sony to align more closely with how most of its community prefers to access and play games today.

However, this explanation has left many gamers and industry analysts feeling unsatisfied. Piers Harding-Rolls, a games industry analyst at Ampere, has pointed out that the data supports Sony’s decision but also highlights the decline of physical media in the gaming sector.

According to Harding-Rolls, the digital share of full game purchases for Sony consoles has increased from 13% in 2013 to almost 80% in 2025. This shift towards digital media is a clear indication of the changing preferences of gamers.

What Are the Concerns Surrounding This Decision?

While Sony’s decision to abandon discs may be driven by a desire to increase profits, it also raises concerns among gamers. Some of the concerns include choice, accessing older physical games on new consoles, the ability to collect physical games, and game preservation.

Harding-Rolls suggests that Sony has money on its mind, as selling games digitally makes game companies more money than selling games in boxes. When PlayStation goes 100% digital from 2028 onwards, the game companies, including Sony, will make more money overall from software sales.

The ditching of a disc drive could also make the PS6 cheaper to produce, particularly given the ongoing RAMpocalypse fueled by the AI boom. Analysts believe the PS6 will launch late 2028, given PlayStation will ditch discs from January of that year.

Despite the concerns surrounding this decision, it appears unlikely that Sony will change its mind. The company’s share price has enjoyed a bump following the announcement, suggesting that the market is in favor of the move. While there are online petitions calling on Sony to reconsider, it seems that their pleas will fall on deaf ears.

One analyst, Robin Zhu, has said that fans of physical media had their chance and blew it, so there’s no going back. Zhu also pointed out that digital game sales carry essentially 100% incremental margin, while the cost of the physical package, shipping, and retailer margins can be more than 20% of the sticker price.

What’s Next for Gamers?

For gamers who are concerned about the shift towards digital-only gaming, it seems that their voices may not be heard. However, the debate surrounding this decision is unlikely to subside anytime soon.
