Violence Erupts in Sri Lankan Prison

A devastating clash broke out inside a prison in Sri Lanka’s capital, Colombo, resulting in the loss of at least 25 lives and over 100 injuries. The incident occurred in the Negombo prison, located approximately 35 kilometers north of the capital, on Sunday and Monday.

The violence began among the inmates, who then turned on the prison officials when they attempted to intervene. Prison spokesman A.C. Gajanayake stated that the inmates started attacking the officials after the guards tried to stop the unrest.

Gajanayake further revealed that some inmates attempted to escape but were thwarted by the prison authorities. The clashes left several officials and inmates dead, while many were hospitalized.

An official at the main state-run hospital in the area reported that more than 100 people were admitted with injuries from the prison clash. However, he did not specify the nature of the injuries.

Sri Lankan prisons are notorious for being highly congested, with over 39,000 inmates crammed into a system that has a total capacity of just 10,000.

The incident has sparked widespread concern about the dire conditions in Sri Lankan prisons and the need for urgent reform. The government has faced criticism for its handling of the situation, with many calling for increased efforts to improve prison conditions and reduce overcrowding.

The exact circumstances surrounding the clash are still unclear, but it is evident that the situation in Sri Lankan prisons requires immediate attention and action.

As the investigation into the incident continues, the Sri Lankan government must take concrete steps to address the underlying issues driving the violence in its prisons.
