Regan Poole: ‘I Play Every Game Like It’s My Last’

Portsmouth defender Regan Poole is gearing up for the new Championship season, and despite being in the final year of his contract, he’s not thinking about his future beyond the pitch.

With 82 league appearances under his belt and four goals to his name since joining the club in July 2023, Poole has made a significant impact at Pompey.

Speaking to BBC Radio Solent, Poole revealed his mindset ahead of the new season: ‘I’m in the last year of my contract, but I play every game like it’s my last anyway, and I don’t think I’ll be changing.’

Despite having a year left on his contract, Poole has expressed his desire to re-sign with the club, stating: ‘I was delighted to sign my new contract when I did the season before last, and I’ll be hoping to do that again.’

For Poole, it’s not just about the contract; it’s about showcasing his capabilities at the highest level. He said: ‘I need to show I’m capable of performing at this level. I hope I’ve shown that, but every season is different, and hopefully I can be at this football club for a little bit longer.’

Portsmouth’s performance last season saw them finish 18th in the Championship, eight points clear of relegation. Poole made 41 league appearances and is ready to fight for his place once again.

When asked about the competition for places, Poole acknowledged the depth of talent at the club: ‘We have a fair few [defenders] in the building, good quality central defenders, maybe five or six, which is crazy for two positions, but it’s healthy.’

Poole’s focus is on ensuring he’s in the team at the start of the season, and he’s not concerned about who he’s competing with: ‘I need to make sure I’m in the team at the start of the season; who with is not my problem.’

Portsmouth’s new season begins at home to QPR on Saturday, 15 August (15:00 BST), and Poole is ready to give it his all.
