Araujo, a 51-year-old Mexican national, was driving a white van with three other men when Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents opened fire, fatally shooting him. The people the agents were looking for were not in the van, but rather were allegedly hiding elsewhere.

Family and Community React

Araujo’s family has come forward to speak about the tragic incident. His eldest son, Ronaldo Salgado, expressed his outrage and sadness over the incident, stating, ‘This is outrageous to me, and this is ridiculous to hear that no one in that van was a target of any sort of investigation.’

Rep. Sylvia Garcia, D-Texas, also weighed in on the incident, saying, ‘As his family has always said, he is a good, solid, decent human being. He was a father. He was a hard worker.’

Disputed Claims and Witness Accounts

The DHS has claimed that Araujo attempted to evade arrest and ‘weaponized his vehicle,’ but witnesses have disputed this claim. A 51-year-old witness, Jose Trinidad Rojas, provided a handwritten statement to attorney Hugo Balderas-Ibarra, stating, ‘That is a lie. It is impossible for them to say that they were going to get run over. There were no officers in front of or behind the vehicle. They were on the sides.’

Attorney Balderas-Ibarra reported that all three men who were passengers in the van recounted the same details while being interviewed separately, stating that there were never any ICE agents in front of the van. They claimed that the agents came in and started shooting from the sides.

Call for Independent Investigation

Texas Democratic lawmakers have called for an independent investigation into the killing of Araujo. Gene Wu, leader of the Texas House Democratic Caucus, stated, ‘Whenever a law enforcement encounter ends in the loss of life, the public deserves a full, transparent, and independent accounting of what happened.’

This incident has raised questions about the actions of ICE agents and the need for greater transparency and accountability in such cases.

Background on the Victim

Lorenzo Salgado Araujo was a business owner from Mexico who had been living in the United States without documentation for 35 years. He was a hardworking individual who was loved by his family and community.

This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the importance of ensuring that law enforcement actions are carried out with the utmost care and respect for human life.

The community is still reeling from the news, and many are calling for greater transparency and accountability in such cases.
