Russian Drone Strike Kills 3 in Ukraine’s Sumy Region

A devastating Russian drone strike killed three people in Ukraine’s northeastern Sumy region on Saturday, local officials said. The victims were identified as drivers for the private courier service Nova Poshta.

According to Sumy regional head Oleh Hryhorov, a large fire broke out when a drone struck a civilian facility. The incident highlights the ongoing threat posed by Russian drone attacks in Ukraine.

In a separate incident in Zaporizhzhia, a Russian drone attack on Friday night hit a shopping center, causing a fire that spread over a 500-square-meter area and resulting in several injuries, regional head Ivan Fedorov said.

A major Russian attack on a site near Kyiv that hosted a defense industry event on Friday killed at least 10 people and wounded nearly 100 others.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned in his evening address on Friday that intelligence assessments indicated that Russia was preparing missiles for a large attack on Ukraine, with indications that this could happen in the next 48 hours.

Romania Shoots Down Second Drone in 24 Hours

Romania’s defense ministry said on Saturday that its forces safely shot down a drone breaching its airspace in an unpopulated area near the Ukrainian border.

Romanian President Nicușor Dan wrote on Facebook that the drone was shot down by a Romanian pilot from an F-16 aircraft.

This incident comes after a drone was shot down around Padina, northeast of the Romanian capital, Bucharest, on Friday.

A series of drone incursions from both Russia and Ukraine have hit Romania and other NATO members since Moscow launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

In June, a Ukrainian maritime drone that was being used in the war exploded at the Black Sea port of Constanta, while three other sea drones exploded outside the port. No one was hurt.

A month earlier, a Russian drone that was part of an attack on Ukraine went astray and struck an apartment building in eastern Romania, injuring two people.

Global Response

The recent surge in drone attacks highlights the escalating tensions between Russia and Ukraine, with implications for regional and global security.

The international community is closely monitoring the situation, with NATO members and other countries providing support to Ukraine in its efforts to counter Russian aggression.

The situation underscores the need for enhanced cooperation and coordination among nations to address the growing threat of drone attacks.
