The Rookie Creator and Cast Unveil Season 9 Premiere Details at Comic-Con 2026

The cast of the popular ABC series, The Rookie, made a triumphant return to Comic-Con 2026, where they shared exciting news about the upcoming ninth season. Led by Nathan Fillion, the cast, including Melissa O’Neil and Eric Winter, were joined by creator Alexi Hawley for the panel discussion.

Hawley revealed that the Season 9 premiere will be a supersized two-parter, setting the stage for a thrilling and dramatic storyline. The creator expressed his enthusiasm for the season, stating, ‘It’s a two-parter, so it won’t all be resolved in one episode – there’s a lot going on. I think it’s the best of what we do, it’s incredibly high stakes, dramatic. It’s a love story, it’s funny and unexpected. I just wish everything up to wait till January to see it.’

The long-awaited Season 9 will kick off in January, following the dramatic Season 8 finale cliffhanger where Tim (Eric Winter) and Lucy (Melissa O’Neil) were abducted seconds after Lucy accepted Tim’s romantic sunset beach proposal. Fans are still reeling from the intense scene, and O’Neil apologized for the emotional rollercoaster, joking, ‘Oh no! We will send you some magnesium to calm you down, have a nice little bit of tea.’ She added, ‘We’re so sorry for that, but also thank you for going along for the ride.’

Season 9 will see the cast diving headfirst into the aftermath of the kidnapping, with Hawley promising, ‘We’re definitely gonna start that way, figure out where they are, and figure out how to get them back, and whatever obstacles we can put in their way on that.’

When asked about her reaction to reading the beach proposal scene in the finale script, O’Neil shared, ‘Honestly, when I was reading it the first time it was like, ‘I can’t believe he’s finally giving it to them, I’m in shock.’ And then the next moment I was like, ‘See? I knew he wasn’t going to give it to them.’ And also, admittedly, my heart went out to everyone who’s deeply invested because I was like, ‘This is gonna be hard.’ So thank you for being so invested. But I went on the rollercoaster with you guys. It was great.’

Winter added that the scene was rushed to shoot, with the whole cast and crew working quickly to capture the sunset proposal. He joked, ‘It was very unceremonious. We were chasing the light.’

The cast also shared some lighthearted advice for the upcoming spinoff series, The Rookie: North, with Fillion suggesting, ‘Learn everybody’s name. It makes it much easier to apologize if ever you are late.’

The Rookie Season 9 is set to premiere in January 2027 on ABC.
