Beloved Producer and Studio Executive Leaves Lasting Legacy

Richard L. O’Connor, a renowned Emmy-winning TV producer and studio executive, passed away on July 22 in Palm Desert at the age of 96. His family announced his death, but a cause was not disclosed.

O’Connor’s extensive career spanned over four decades, leaving an indelible mark on the entertainment industry. Born in San Francisco on January 7, 1930, he shared a special bond with his twin brother, Don. Together, they served in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War from 1950-1951. Following their military service, Richard pursued a career in Hollywood, beginning in the mail room at CBS Television City.

This marked the start of an illustrious career that would eventually see O’Connor producing and working as a studio executive on numerous high-profile projects. He accumulated an impressive array of credits, including On Golden Pond (1981), The Muppet Movie (1979), Movie, Movie (1978), Friendly Fire (1979), and Raise The Titanic (1980).

As a producer, O’Connor’s credits included TV movies and episodes of series and limited series such as Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman (1993), Amerika (1987), A Death in California (1985), Fatal Vision (1984), and Angels in the Endzone (1997), among others. His work earned him an Emmy Award for Outstanding Children’s Program for producing the 1989 NBC TV movie A Mother’s Courage: The Mary Thomas Story starring Alfre Woodard.

O’Connor’s family has expressed their gratitude for the outpouring of love and support. He is survived by his wife, Brona; daughters Kathleen, Triglia, and Karen; stepchildren Kate, Marc, and Matt; four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and one great-great-granddaughter.
