In January, he noted that he was under 24-hour care and could no longer hold his drumsticks properly without feeling pain, even resorting to taping his sticks to his hands to get through later gigs. His kidney issues, which led to five operations on his knee, were a direct result of his abuse of alcohol.

A Harrowing Hospital Stay

Collins was admitted to the hospital in late 2023, about a year after his last tour with Genesis. He recalled the dire situation: ‘My kidneys were packing up, my organs were just seizing up.’ His doctors were worried that he might not make it, with some even discussing whether to take him off life support. Collins remembered, ‘There were some decisions to be made about, ‘Do we keep Phil on life support?’ kind of thing.’

Collins’ health issues were so severe that people were coming to say their goodbyes. However, he doesn’t recall anyone visiting him during his hospital stay. This is a testament to the severity of his condition and the fact that he was in a state of complete unawareness.

Collins has since revealed that he almost didn’t make it out of the hospital alive. He was ‘very lucky’ to have come out of that ordeal, and it served as a wake-up call for him to change his ways. He confessed, ‘Needless to say, I haven’t had a drink since.’
