War and Climate Change Threaten Sudan’s Ancient Meroe Pyramids

Located in the heart of Sudan, the Meroe pyramids are an ancient testament to the ingenuity and craftsmanship of the Kingdom of Kush. This UNESCO World Heritage Site, comprising over 200 pyramids built between 800 B.C. and 350 A.D., is facing an existential threat due to the ongoing war in Sudan.

According to archaeologist Mahmoud Suleiman, the site is at risk of a catastrophic disaster, with the possibility of collapses looming over the pyramids. The war, which erupted in April 2023, has already destroyed multiple historical sites and museums across the country.

Ancient Monuments Under Threat

The Meroe pyramids have been severely affected by the conflict, with the sand dunes surrounding the site growing thicker and grasses growing inside the temples. Stones have begun to fall, and the fragile stones are degrading due to the accumulation of salt from the sand.

Mustafa Ahmed, a guard at Meroe, witnessed the devastating impact firsthand. He expressed concern over the deteriorating condition of the pyramids, stating that the grass has grown thick, and the sand has thickened heavily on the pyramids and even inside the temples.

Archaeologist Suleiman pointed out that climate change, the dispersal of the workforce due to the war, and the difficulty for foreign missions to continue their work amid the country’s security instability have all contributed to the significant deterioration of the site.

Consequences of War and Climate Change

The war in Sudan has had a devastating impact on the country’s cultural heritage. UNESCO warned in April that over 100 cultural sites have been damaged, and at least 22 museums have been looted or destroyed since the onset of the conflict.

The Meroe pyramids are not the only site affected by the war. Sudan’s deadly conflict has destroyed multiple historical sites and museums across the country, leaving a trail of destruction and loss of cultural heritage.
