Get ready for the ultimate Tomb Raider experience as Lara Croft’s legendary acrobatics make a triumphant return in the latest installment, Legacy of Atlantis. Developed by Crystal Dynamics and Flying Wild Hog, this fresh take on the classic adventure game brings back the high-flying movement, both in traversal and combat, that fans have been eagerly awaiting.
Why Acrobatics Matter in Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis
According to game director Raul Siqueira, the team’s focus on Lara’s iconic movements is a deliberate attempt to bring back the spirit of the original game. ‘This is a moment where a normal person would step to the side,’ Siqueira explains. ‘Lara Croft doesn’t step to the side; she cartwheels to the side, because she’s fast, because she’s agile, because she can do all of those things.’
Principal technical game designer Grzegorz Grzywacz echoes this sentiment, emphasizing that Lara’s physicality is what makes her, Lara. ‘She’s moving confidently, with all these acrobatics, climbing and jumping,’ Grzywacz says. ‘That’s what makes Lara, Lara.’
But why was it so important to bring back Lara’s acrobatic abilities? The answer lies in the game’s core design philosophy. ‘All of those things were the biggest issue for us,’ creative director Michal Kuk admits. ‘Because a regular jump isn’t a Lara Croft regular jump, right?’
Alix Wilton Regan’s Training Regimen
Actress Alix Wilton Regan, who plays Lara in the game, underwent extensive training to get into character. ‘I did a lot – I still do a lot – of weight training, running, yoga, rock-climbing,’ she reveals. ‘I freakin’ love rock climbing, that is my jam.’
Regan’s dedication to her role is evident in her performance, which showcases Lara’s strength and agility. ‘She is very, very strong. She is very, very capable,’ Regan says. ‘I really wanted to bring that confidence to Lara.’
Players will be able to practice Lara’s acrobatic moves to their heart’s content before setting off to explore new areas of the game. Fans are ecstatic about the developers’ dedication to Lara’s classic moves, which have been confirmed as a major factor in defining her character.
As one player aptly puts it, ‘Her acrobatics are a part of her character. Literally no one else has or ever done it like her. Thank you for bringing it back to life!’
With its fresh take on the classic adventure game, Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis promises to deliver an unforgettable experience for fans of the series. Get ready to join Lara on an epic journey that’s full of action, excitement, and heart-pumping acrobatics.
IGN got the chance to preview the game at Summer Game Fest 2026, with Simon Cardy saying it ‘makes a 30-year-old adventure feel brand-new.’
