‘The Odyssey’ Dominates Box Office with $20M Tuesday
The highly anticipated film, ‘The Odyssey’, has made a significant impact on the box office, posting a powerful $20M Tuesday. This achievement is a testament to the movie’s engaging storyline, impressive ensemble cast, and the skillful direction of Christopher Nolan.
According to recent reports, ‘The Odyssey’ is on its way to becoming Christopher Nolan’s best Tuesday ever at the domestic box office, surpassing the 2008 film, ‘The Dark Knight’. This achievement is a remarkable milestone for the film, which has been gaining momentum since its release.
Currently, among all Tuesdays this year, ‘The Odyssey’ ranks second behind Disney/Pixar’s ‘Toy Story 5’, which earned a significant $23.69M on June 23. The film also holds the second position among all Tuesdays for a Universal movie, behind ‘Jurassic World’, which earned $24.3M on June 16, 2015.
As the film enters its second weekend, it is expected to hold all IMAX and PLF screens, charting a course for a 40% to 50% ease in the $61.8M-$74M range. There is a possibility that the movie may best the second frame of Nolan’s ‘Dark Knight’ movies, which earned $75.1M and $62.1M, respectively.
Superhero movies are typically front-loaded, and as a result, it is unlikely that ‘The Odyssey’ will follow the same pattern as Nolan’s ‘Dark Knight’ movies. However, the film’s unique storyline and engaging cast may help it to maintain a strong presence at the box office.
In a separate development, the second weekend of ‘Oppenheimer’ saw a dip of 43% with $46.7M, a relatively low figure compared to the expected performance of ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’, which is expected to outstrip ‘The Odyssey’s record $123.5M opening for a live-action movie this year.
Other releases this weekend include ‘Motor City’, a dialogue-less noir film from Potsy Ponciroli, which has been booked at 1,600 theaters and is expected to perform in the low single digits. Additionally, ‘Hadestown: The Musical’ has been released at 1,944 theaters and is expected to perform well, with pre-sales already exceeding $5M and expected to reach between $7M-$10M.
‘Her Private Hell’, a Cannes out of competition noir genre pic from Nicolas Winding Refn, is also set to be released this weekend, with bookings at around 700 sites and expected to perform in the low single digits.
