Devastating Earthquake Hits Japan’s Kyushu Island

A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.1 struck southwestern Japan on Tuesday, causing widespread destruction and a significant loss of life. The earthquake, which hit at approximately 4:27 p.m. local time, has resulted in a death toll of 13, with the number expected to rise as rescue efforts continue.

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has warned that ‘time is of the essence’ as rescue teams work tirelessly to reach those trapped under the rubble of collapsed buildings. The Nippon Paper Yatsushiro Mill in Yatsushiro City and Aeon Mall Kumamoto in Kashima Town are among the most affected areas, with reports of people feared to be trapped in both locations.

Rescue Operations in Full Swing

Japan’s Fire and Disaster Management Agency is working closely with other agencies to rescue those trapped in Aeon Mall, where part of the second floor has collapsed. At the paper mill, a chimney has collapsed, leaving nine people unaccounted for and their safety unknown. Two people have been rescued from the mill, but are in cardiopulmonary arrest.

Emergency safety measures have been put in place for 92,743 people in two cities, while evacuation orders cover 222,250 people in three cities and three towns in Kumamoto. The disaster agency has reported that 29 people were injured in the earthquake, with six seriously injured and 22 suffering minor injuries.

A total of 345 teams, comprising 1,139 responders from eight prefectures, have been deployed to the affected areas. The teams include local agencies, with a total of 1,410 personnel on the ground.

Prime Minister Takaichi has pledged to mobilize every available resource to rescue and save as many lives as possible. ‘There are still people awaiting rescue, and time is of the essence,’ she said in a statement.

Assessment of Damage Continues

The damage from the earthquake is extensive, according to Prime Minister Takaichi, with assessments still underway. Kyushu Electric Power has reported that the earthquake has had no impact on the Sendai or Genkai nuclear power plants.
