Recent Claude Chat Exposure Highlights Importance of Privacy Settings
Anthropic’s AI chatbot, Claude, has been making headlines in recent days due to a security breach that exposed user conversations on Google. The issue was discovered by Redditors over the weekend, who found a treasure trove of conversations between Claude users and their AI bots by searching for a keyword followed by ‘site:claude.ai/share’. While Anthropic has since plugged the security hole, users are left wondering whether their chats were exposed and what they can do to prevent future leaks.
The good news is that private Claude chats that weren’t shared are unlikely to be involved in this latest exposure. However, if you do share your chats, your conversations might have been part of the indexing that happened over the weekend. This raises concerns about the potential for future chats to leak onto the web, as well as the fact that Google once indexed ChatGPT conversations.
So, why were Claude chats exposed in the first place? It appears that Anthropic doesn’t share chat links to Google directly, but rather relies on users sharing their chats publicly. When you share a chat, it generates a public link that can be indexed by search engines like Google. This means that users who share their chats may have inadvertently made them visible to the public.
Further complicating things is the fact that Claude’s ‘artifacts’ are still visible on Google. Artifacts are generated when the content of your project meets certain criteria, and can include documents, code snippets, HTML sites, SVG images, diagrams, flowcharts, and Interactive React components. While users may want these artifacts to be public, it’s worth noting that they can also be indexed by search engines.
To protect your Claude chats from future exposure, it’s essential to take action. While there isn’t a reliable way to identify whether your chats were included in this exposure, you can ensure that none of them are ever indexed by a search engine in the future. To do so, you’ll need to shut down sharing by following these steps:
- Head to Settings > Privacy in Claude.
- Choose ‘Manage’ next to ‘Shared chats.’
- Scroll through the list and select ‘Unshare’ next to each chat you’d like to remove.
This won’t delete your chats, but rather remove their public links that were indexed by search engines. By taking these steps, you can help ensure that your Claude chats remain private and secure.
