IO Interactive’s Original Vision for 007: First Light Revealed: An Ensemble Piece with Bond’s Fellow 00s

In a recent interview with Eurogamer, First Light’s lead writer Michael Vogt shed light on the game’s development process, revealing that the team initially envisioned 007: First Light as an ensemble piece, with Bond’s fellow 00 trainees playing a much bigger role in the story.

According to Vogt, the game’s first act was designed to set up this ensemble concept, with players introduced to Cressida Bright and Lennox Monroe, Bond’s fellow 00s, during the training sequence. However, as the story progressed, the focus shifted to Bond’s character development, and the ensemble concept was ultimately cut short.

It’s interesting to note that Vogt can’t recall exactly when this change was made, but it would explain why Cressida and Monroe feel like companions who were going to accompany Bond through the entire game. For at least a part of the game’s development, that was the plan.

Vogt explained that the team made a false promise to players during the training sequence, setting up the expectation that the game would be an ensemble piece with all the 00s working together, as they do in Slovakia. However, the rug was pulled out from under players when most of the 00s died, and Bond emerged as the top agent.

Logically, this makes sense, as you wouldn’t put a newly trained agent out in the field on their own until you’re certain they can handle it. Given Bond’s roguish tendencies, it would probably take a while for him to mature into a capable agent.

The story beat that this change serves is that it goes from all fun and games for Bond – he’s a young kid, he’s on an adventure, and he’s out globetrotting and playing secret agent – but after the explosion, he wakes up to the harsh reality. When M says that 00 life expectancy is very short, it’s like ‘Oh, right’. He gets it, and he matures from that, of course, and also from the guilt – maybe the survivor’s guilt – of being the one who made it.

The team’s decision to cut the ensemble concept short ultimately allowed for a more focused narrative that explores Bond’s character development and his growth into a capable agent. While it’s interesting to consider what could have been, it’s clear that the game’s final product is a compelling and engaging story that has captivated players worldwide.

It’s worth noting that IO Interactive’s commitment to building a strong narrative and characters is evident throughout the game. The team’s attention to detail and dedication to creating a believable world has paid off, resulting in a game that is both entertaining and immersive.

In conclusion, the original vision for 007: First Light as an ensemble piece with Bond’s fellow 00s is a fascinating insight into the game’s development process. While it may have been an interesting direction to take, the final product is a testament to the team’s dedication to creating a compelling narrative and characters that have captured the hearts of players worldwide.
