Warner Bros. in Crisis Over Barbie 2 Sequel
Negotiations for the highly anticipated sequel to 2023’s box office smash hit Barbie have come to a grinding halt. According to a recent report from The New York Times, Warner Bros. and the creative team behind the original film are locked in a months-long standoff over a deal to bring back director Greta Gerwig, writer Noah Baumbach, and stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling.
As the clock ticks down, the pressure is mounting on Warner Bros. to reach a deal with the talent by December 2026. If they fail to do so, the rights to the movie franchise will revert back to Mattel, effectively killing the sequel in its current form.
The report notes that Warner Bros. has made significant offers to the returning talent, including a cut of box office profits based on the success of the first film, as well as raises, including paying Gosling his $20 million asking price. However, current Warner Bros. CEO David Zaslav believes the offers on the table are ‘too generous’ and has refused to give them the green light.
A Warner Bros. representative refuted this claim, stating that talent representatives declined an offer made in May and have yet to file a counteroffer. As the situation remains at a standstill, the report notes that time is not on anyone’s side.
Gerwig and Baumbach have reportedly expressed their enthusiasm for the sequel, with Gerwig telling Deadline in March 2024 that she was ‘on board’ with the project. Even then, it was clear that the wait for more would be long, as both Robbie and the creative team had previously said their expectations to deliver a Barbie 2 were low.
The impact of a deal not being reached would be significant, with the sequel losing its current creative team and having to start from scratch. This would not only delay the production of the film but also require a new story to be developed, effectively making it a completely different project.
The original film premiered to both commercial and critical success, with IGN giving it a 9/10 review, calling it ‘a masterful exploration of femininity and the pressures of perfection.’ The creative team behind it is undoubtedly one of the main reasons for its success, and their departure would be a significant blow to the franchise.
As the situation remains at a standstill, one can only wonder what the future holds for the Barbie franchise. Will Warner Bros. be able to reach a deal with the talent, or will the sequel be stuck in limbo forever? Only time will tell.
